Daily Mail - Science & tech

For millions of people, WhatsApp is a vital connection to friends and family around the world. But cybersecurity experts have issued a fresh warning over an insidious scam which has already duped users out of almost half a million pounds since the start of 2025. In the so-called'Hi Mum' scam, criminals impersonate a family member to trick their victims into sending them money. Now, fraudsters are even using AI voice impersonation technology to dupe their victims. The scam begins by sending a WhatsApp message saying'Hi Mum' or'Hi Dad' as the sender claims they have lost their phone and have been locked out of their bank account.

BBC presenter's likeness used in advert after firm tricked by AI-generated voice

The Guardian

There was something strange about her voice, they thought. It was not unfamiliar but, after a while, it started to go all over the place. Science presenter Liz Bonnin's accent, as regular BBC viewers know, is Irish. But this voice message, ostensibly granting permission to use her likeness in an ad campaign, seemed to place her on the other side of the world. The message, it turns out, was a fake – AI-generated to mimic Bonnin's voice.

Would you roleplay with a chatbot? Bizarre AI bot can send you sexts and erotic voice notes - and they're eerily realistic

Daily Mail - Science & tech

From ChatGPT to virtual girlfriends, a range of weird and wonderful chatbots have emerged in recent months amid the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI). But the latest AI-powered app is arguably the most bizarre yet. Users of the erotic audio platform, BLOOM, can now send and receive sexts and voice notes from their favourite characters, with the launch of AI'roleplaying' chatbots. The move, which its creators say will set a'new, realistic standard for pleasure' will let BLOOM's nearly half a million users directly chat with characters from erotica and receive voice messages in the characters' voices. The AI model powering these chatbots has been trained to ensure they stay true to the style and personality of the audio-story characters, so, whether you're chatting with Rob the charming ranch hand or having a late-night conversation with'strict German Professor Roman', the AI ensures the bot never breaks character.

AI is fuelling a rise in online voice scams, study warns

Daily Mail - Science & tech

AI technology is fuelling an explosion in voice cloning scams, experts have warned. Fraudsters can now mimic a victim's voice using just a three second snippet of audio, often stolen from social media profiles. It is then used to phone a friend or family member convincing them they are in trouble and urgently need money. One in four Britons say they or someone they know has been targeted by the scam, according to cybersecurity specialists McAfee. It is so believable the majority of those affected admitted they have lost money as a result, with the cost for around a third of victims over £1,000.

Apple's revamped HomePod offers new tricks - and one glaring flaw

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Apple has conquered the world of audio several times over. First with the iPod and iTunes, then with its ubiquitous AirPods - all of which changed the way the world listened to music and made phone calls. But the one device that failed to shift the dial was the HomePod, a voice-controlled Siri smart speaker that launched in 2018 and was discontinued in 2021 after lackluster sales. The smaller HomePod Mini remains on sale. But it never held a candle to the larger device, which sounded better than just about any rival when it launched in 2018, even if it lacked some of the'smart' features offered by rivals from Google and Amazon.

Transform speech into knowledge with Huggingface/Facebook AI and expert.ai - KDnuggets

#artificialintelligence

Studies show that if we listen to a 10-minute speech, on average, we retain 50% of it initially, 25% after 48 hours, and only 10% after a week. In short, we hold on to a very limited amount of what we hear. It's not difficult to see how this cognitive limit can cause inefficiencies in scenarios where listening is key. Additionally, personal biases have an impact on what we grasp from verbal communication. Not to mention all the distractions that constantly interfere with our ability to focus on a conversation.
